I think I spent some time choosing our tent, which we’ve probably had for around five years or more.

At the time we bought it, it was probably the biggest tent available and certainly one of the tallest (at over six foot standing room).

As I remember, when we were booking our camp site pitch we’d have to let them know the size of the tent to make sure they allocated us a big enough space!

Nowadays, it’s rare to see one of the old canvas frame tents, and most newer tents are a similar size to ours.

In fact, it’s become a real interest to walk round a campsite just to look and see the different designs, shapes and specifications of tent!

Although ours is a large size tent it has four sleeping compartments and a central area. I can’t imagine how difficult it is for families to try and erect those tents which have one central area and three pods sticking out like spokes on a wheel!

Last August bank holiday we went away camping with the church.

Interestingly there were tents of all shapes and sizes – all were large enough for a family of five or six, some were big enough to fit eight people.

What makes a good family tent ?

If you want a bit of peace and quiet, having separate sleeping compartments from the kids is a good idea.

For wet weather, a large space inside the tent where you can stand up with ease is essential. It’s bad enough when it’s raining, but at least you’ll be able to cook, play games and keep the children occupied.

The ability to store large amounts of equipment inside the tent is also helpful – so, if you’ve taken a folding table and chairs, being able to set this up inside may be helpful for early morning breakfasts or rainy weather.

Larger tents with more compartments also offer flexibility – you can store all the cooking equipment and food in one area and close it off when not in use.

Don’t forget to make sure you have a groundsheet for the entire tent – if there’s a porch area, do take along a groundsheet to use to prevent mud getting inside.
